  • RULES KNOWLEDGE – The candidate demonstrates: Good knowledge of the rules and proper understanding of their application • Knowledge and effective use of World Sailing cases and US Sailing appeals • Awareness of proper race committee procedures • Clear understanding of the rule definitions • Ability to identify the precise moment of rule transition • Willingness to accept the rules as written, including the notice of race and sailing instructions*
  • HEARINGS – The candidate: Arrives punctually at hearings • Understands and follows protest committee procedures • Identifies the key facts • Asks pertinent questions to get to the relevant facts • Avoids asking repetitive or irrelevant questions • Comes to a logical conclusion and a proper decision • Contributes meaningfully to the discussions in hearings • Accepts the decision of the team when it differs from his or her view*
  • COMMUNICATION – The candidate: Listens carefully and takes into account the opinions and observations of fellow jurors • Uses correct terminology • Uses radio properly, including procedures and response to calls • Clearly describes incidents after the event, both afloat and ashore • Communicates clearly and calmly with competitors, fellow judges and organizers • Speaks and understands English adequately to perform his or her duties*
  • TEMPERAMENT AND BEHAVIOR – The candidate: Learns and accepts change • Works within a team • Remains open-minded and acknowledges the point of view of others • Empathizes with competitors • Shows no bias, positive or negative, to any competitor • Maintains good relations with judges, organizers and race committee • Communicates cordially and politely with competitors, while maintaining appropriate formality • Remains calm under stress and makes timely and accurate decisions • Treats all jury room matters as confidential • Performs his or her duties punctually • Accepts the RRS, US Sailing appeals and World Sailing cases as written • Respects other people's property and uses it with care • Dresses appropriately on the water, in the jury room, and socially after work • Abstains from alcohol until the day’s work is done • Refrains from unauthorized communication with the media*
  • ON-THE-WATER SKILLS – The candidate: Properly prepares the boat before departing • Safely and skillfully operates small powerboats near sailboats, including mooring, docking, and motoring to and from the race area • Properly positions the boat on the race course to enforce rule 42 • Correctly identifies breaches of rule 42 • Demonstrates sensitivity to wash, wake and windage*
  • PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES – The candidate: Is capable of going on the water in small boats for extended periods in a variety of weather conditions and then hearing protests at the end of the day (when appropriate) • Has no impairment that keeps him or her from serving effectively as a member of a jury*
