  • What is a boat ID?

US Sailing assigns a unique boat ID to every boat issued an ORC or ORR certificate since 2022. You should have received an email with your boat ID.

Why do we need a boat ID?

US Sailing is building a universal measurement database for offshore sailboats in the U.S. A unique boat ID helps the Offshore Office track each boat’s rating history more efficiently and provide faster, more accurate service.

  • Do you have a Boat ID assigned by US Sailing?*
  • Boat ID Support: If your Boat ID is not working in the field above, please try the following steps:

    1. Input Boat ID (first character is a number, followed by 6 upper case letters)
    2. Click the blue button below the input field labeled "Click here to Automatically Fill Boat Data in Form"
    3. If the Boat ID is valid, a green check mark will appear
    4. Click the "Next" button to continue the form

  • Boat Contact Information

  • Due to privacy laws, US Sailing is unable to pre-populate personal contact information at this time.

  • ORC Club certificates do not require verified measurements. Owners may declare selected measurements, while the rating office assigns the remaining parameters. When information is unavailable, the rating office will apply estimates or default values that favor a faster rating.

ORCi certificates require the boat to be fully measured by a US Sailing–recognized Yacht Measurer in accordance with the Universal Measurement System. The hull and appendages must be measured, and the offset file must be approved by ORC to meet ORCi standards.

Some races apply a "rating speed limit" for ORCi versus ORC Club certificates. In those cases, all boats with an ORC APH of 500 or lower must hold a valid ORCi certificate to race. Please check your race NOR to determine which certificate level is required for your boat.

  • Do you need an ORC Club or an ORCi certificate?*
  • Partially Measured — Owners may declare a subset of the required measurements, while the rating office assigns the remaining parameters. If information is unavailable, the rating office will use estimates based on sister-ship data, with the aim of producing a faster rating.

Fully Measured — This certificate is based on a complete measurement carried out by a US Sailing-recognized Yacht Measurer. It provides the most accurate rating available under the rule system.

For both certificate types, sails must be measured directly by a US Sailing/World Sailing-trained sail measurer.

  • Do you need a partially measured or fully measured ORR Certificate?*
  • Certificate Transaction Type

  • ORR Certificate Transaction Types

Attention: If you do not already have a certificate for the current year, you must apply for a renewal. Renewals may be submitted with or without changes.

Renewal — A renewal is for a boat that held a certificate in a prior year. It may be submitted with changes, such as new sails or updated measurements, or with no changes.

Amendment — An amendment is used to report configuration changes to a current-year certificate, such as new or remeasured sails or a change in crew weight.

Additional Certificate — Boats with a current-year certificate may apply for an additional certificate, including a double-handed/short-handed, non-SPI/HSF, or standard certificate. This category also applies to boats holding a current-year ORR certificate and applying for a second ORR configuration certificate.

  • ORC Certificate Transaction Types:

Important: If you do not already have a certificate for the current year, you must apply for a renewal. A renewal may include changes, and submitting any other application type may delay processing.

Renewal — For boats renewing a certificate from a prior year. A renewal may be submitted with changes, such as new sails or updated measurements, or with no changes.

Amendment — For making changes to a current-year certificate, such as new or remeasured sails or a crew weight update.

Additional Certificate — For boats with a current-year certificate that are requesting an additional certificate, such as a double-handed/short-handed, non-SPI/HSF, or standard certificate. A boat may hold one certificate of each type concurrently under ORC rules.

  • Certificate Transaction Types:

New - A boat has never received a certificate under this rating rule previously. The boat may have receieved a certificate under a different rule.

  • ORC Reported Sail Requirements

Below is a list of the sails which must be measured and reported on ORC Certificates. The dimensions are needed in metric units. Please review the list even if you are a seasoned competitor:

    • Largest mainsail
    • Largest headsail set on the forestay.
    • Largest symmetric spinnaker (if carried)
    • Largest asymmetric spinnaker, having SHW/SFL ≥ 85% (if carried)
    • All asymmetric spinnakers having SHW/SFL between 75-85%
    • All headsails set flying, having SHW/SFL < 75% (both staysails and flying headsails)
    • Mizzen
    • Mizzen Staysail
    • Quadrilateral sail or sail set on the wishbone boom

You are welcome to report all your sails to us, if you do so, please report the sail measurement through the Sail Measurement Form for each sail. Your sailmaker can supply you with these measurements or they can send them to us directly. If you are unsure on if a sail should be reported or is the largest of its category, please send us the sail anyway and we will help decide if it is needed. There is no rating penalty for additional sails being displayed on the certificate.

  • ORR Reported Sail Requirements

Below is a list of the sails which must be measured and reported on ORR Certificates. The dimensions are needed in metric units. Please review the list even if you are a seasoned competitor:

    • Largest mainsail
